England along with Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a group together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
