The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
