Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
